Just after dinner that night, Eve took Gus for his evening walk, out along the Old Toll Road with its sweeping views of the River Sax and the mudflats. She was on her way home again when two police patrol cars passed her, skirting round the village green and down Dark Lane.

Had the police gotten a lead? She imagined how relaxed she’d feel if they made an arrest.

She was making a drink a short while later when there was a knock on the cottage door, sending Gus into a frenzy of excitement. She went to open up.

Viv’s bright pink hair, which normally tied in with her rosy cheeks, now contrasted an unusually pale face. Her eyes were gleaming and red-rimmed after what Eve guessed must have been a sustained bout of crying. She held a bottle of brandy in her right hand.

‘I thought I’d better come and tell you,’ she said. ‘And you might need this.’ She held out the spirit.

Eve let her in wordlessly and her new friend sank down onto one of the couches.

‘It’s just going around the village. Fi Goddard’s been found dead. Cole Wentworth discovered her out on the heath this afternoon, with her head smashed in.’
